Take Five: South Asian style

Post was created on June 28th, 2012

Dave Brubeck’s Take Five was a favourite when I was getting into jazz music years ago, and is one of the few well-known jazz tunes that mucks around with a different time signature. Now a Pakistani group has done their own interpretation, with the lead melody played on sitar, supported by tabla and a conventional western string section. It’s great stuff. Take Five by Sachal Studios

The initiative seems to be inspired by Coke Studio, a hugely popular Pakistani music television series which featured live studio-recorded music performances by various South Asian artists. An Indian version of the series commenced in 2011. Sadly, the original Coke Studio videos – which were a huge hit on YouTube – have been taken down.
